The inaugural conference was held on April 26, 2019 at the Henry Madden Library at CSU Fresno with more than 200 participants in attendance. Of the near 50 presenters were six undergraduate researchers from CSU Long Beach. Led by Drs. Stacy Macias and Abraham Weil, these students found their attendance to be exciting, intellectually engaging, and transformational in their own research projects and enthusiastically supported hosting the second annual conference.
With the support of Dr. Jennifer Reed, the chair of CSULB’s Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Drs. Macias and Weil offered students the unique opportunity to engage in a two-semester course experience, culminating in the student-led organization of the conference. In the fall, students theorized feminist organizing and principles and, in the spring, put that knowledge into practice by working to organize a CSU-wide undergraduate research conference on gender, race, and sexuality to be held March 27, 2020 at California State University, Long Beach.
Organized by students at CSULB and the WGSS department, this year’s theme, Fueling Feminist Futures: A Call to Action, invites undergraduate researchers, community members, and affiliates across the CSU-system to organize and present feminist research with an attention to rethinking feminist life beyond racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia.
CSULB looks forward to continuing this important work and we are excited to support the organizers of next year’s conference.
